The first popular Florentine library—named for Pietro Thouar—opened in the Oltrarno in 1914. It was founded in Santo Spirito’s Palazzo Guadagna. Over the years, many other cultural institutions have established their headquarters in the area, enhancing the district’s cultural identity. Some of its most renowned institutions include the Bonsanti Contemporary Archives in Via Maggio and the British Institute Library, considered one of the most important structures of its kind in Italy.
